complete information about hammocks available … along with the
best sources for buying your ultimate hammock.
A hammock is a fabric or
rope “sling” you lay in while hanging from a support such as a
couple of trees (palm trees preferably!), fixed supports (say,
a sailboat mast and forestay – even better than palm trees!),
or a hammock stand. They were created in the tropics, and
became popular with sailors, soldiers and explorers for their
light weight, small bulk, and comfort. Depending on the style,
you either lie in line with or across the bed. Today they are
popular with beach goers, campers, sailors, and even tailgaters
waiting for the big game to begin.
Hammock Styles
Most hammocks today look
pretty similar; however, they vary considerably when you
compare how they are made, the materials they are made from,
and how they are intended to be used.
While there are a myriad
of materials, colors and construction methods, there are
basically two sizes available. Single person units with a
weight restriction of 200-300 pounds, and multi-person (2-3
people) units that support generally 450-600 pounds. Widths can
be as narrow as about three feet, and as wide as fourteen feet.
They run from about six feet to 12 feet long. There are a
number of different styles.
Spreader Bar Hammocks
have wooden, plastic or metal bars at each end, which spreads
the width out so it is easy to get in and out. This is more of
a casual unit, good for the backyard but not designed for
travel or considered very comfortable for sleeping.
Brazilian hammocks are
made from fabric, usually cotton, and is considered to
generally be more long-lasting than string weaves. Ti is felt
you can get a more consistent quality between manufacturers
with this style, as opposed to the variants created when
considering woven structures.
Nicaraguan and Mayan
hammocks are constructed of fabric or nylon string that is
woven into a net. Nicaraguan models have a tighter, more dense
net. Quality is determined by the materials used, quantity of
strings used, and the weave used.
Venezuelan hammocks,
often called “jungle hammocks,” are usually made of polyester,
Dacron or other breathable materials. These lightweight and
easy-to-pack hammocks often include mosquito netting and rain
canopies, making them them ideal for backpacking and
camping.
Hammock Stands
Hammocks can simply be
strung between a couple of trees or fixed objects, or from a
hammock stand. These stands can be made from metal or wood
(some are beautiful furniture), and can also be designed to be
portable (they can fold, with easy setup and
teardown).
While it’s important to
find a hammock that works best for your intended use, it’s
equally important to find one that you’re comfortable in. While
you can lay inline with the bed, or across it, a general
consensus is that laying diagonally across the bed is most
comfortable (especially if you have back pain).
